Kupe Above the War Canoe at Waitangi
Kupe is a legendary figure that features prominently in the mythology and oral history of some Māori iwi. Various legends and histories describe Kupe as being involved with the Polynesian discovery of Aotearoa, around 1000 CE, however, the details differ from iwi to iwi. It is aid that Kupe was a great chief of Hawaiki (Tahiti), whose father was from Rarotonga, and whose mother was from Rangiatea (Ra'iatea), where her father lived. These were the three islands over which Kupe's mana (power) extended.
